family – Uptown Moxie

Hello there, and happy summer! Sorry more than a few hot seconds have passed between my last update and now… it has been a very busy couple of weeks. I have a lot I’d like to update you guys on, but I’m going to take this one post at a time. :)

My parents came to town a few weeks back, and one of my favorite places we visited was the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Not only a nice (and affordable!) escape from the “city” part of The City, but it was also an excellent excuse to break out my old (still pretty new) DSLR. Here’s a few unedited photos that I thought turned out pretty nice.

Although Cherry Blossom season had come and gone, this place was bigger and more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. If you live in NYC and haven’t been, don’t wait to use visitors as an excuse to check out this place. It’s well worth it on your own.

I went to my birthstate of Ohio for Christmas, and it was lovely. While I wish I had a hilariously long and witty event-filled recap for you, that wouldn’t be paying proper homage to my hometown. But full disclosure: doing a whole lot of nothing for six days was exactly what I needed. I was able to spend some quality time with all of the friends and family I wanted to see, and to me, that’s what home is. Well, that and Wal-Mart people-watching, Bob Evans’ breakfasts and $5 movies at the 11% occupied “mall.” I unfortunately wasn’t able to get any good family pictures this time around, which is seriously depressing because my mom’s Facebook default is from the stage of my life when an old manager informed me I had the hairstyle of an Orthodox Jew. But I suppose that’s just another reason for them (my parents, not Jewish women) to come and visit me in old New York!

What am I reading?

Uptown Moxie (formerly known as Little Girl and the Big Apple) began as a way to document my crazy adventures when I moved to NYC as a young college graduate freshly plucked from an Ohio cornfield.

These days, I reside in Chicago and write when I can (which is never as much as I’d like). I utilize this as a place to tell stories, write about my passions, and share photos of whatever I capture when I have my camera on me (which is also never as much as I’d like). In the past five years, everything has changed and nothing has changed.

And because I sense your curiosity through the screen – it's called Uptown Moxie because Christie Brinkley is my alter ego and while I’ve seen Lost in Yonkers exactly once (and coincidentally have been lost in Yonkers exactly once), it left a lasting impression.
